Queenstown:
The West Indies, batting first after losing the toss, were 129 for five wickets in the 36th over when heavy rain forced the abandonment of play at the Queenstown Events Centre.
Rain had interrupted play twice previously, after the first over when the tourists were 1-0 and at 49-2. Heavier showers in the middle and late afternoon soaked the playing area and left umpires Mark Benson of England and Tony Hill of New Zealand with no choice but to abandon the match.
Ramnaresh Sarwan was top-scorer for the West Indies with 38, while Chris Gayle made 25 and Xavier Marshall was 29 not out when rain stopped play. Tim Southee was the best of the New Zealand bowlers, taking 2-33 from 7.4 overs.
The second match of the series is at Christchurch on Saturday.
Lineups:
New Zealand: Jesse Ryder, Brendon McCullum, Jamie How, Ross Taylor, Daniel Flynn, Grant Elliot, Jacob Oram, Daniel Vettori (captain), Kyle Mills, Tim Southee, Mark Gillespie.
West Indies: Sewnarine Chattergoon, Chris Gayle, Xavier Marshall, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Brendan Nash, Denesh Ramdin, Jerome Taylor, Nikita Miller, Kieron Pollard, Lionel Baker, Fidel Edwards.
Umpires: Mark Benson, England, and Tony Hill, New Zealand.
Match referee: Javagal Srinath, India. TV umpire: Evan Watkin, New Zealand.
