Kolkata:
Currently ignored by the Sri Lankan selectors for the ODI squad, Vaas who was part of the Test side against Bangladesh, said he is very much in the scheme of things for the one-dayers and that the selectors are just trying out options ahead of the World Cup.
"The selectors are trying out a few youngsters to give them some exposure before the World Cup. That's fair enough for youngsters to come up and showcase their talent.
"I am playing Test cricket, but I'm always there for one-day cricket as well. I am fit enough for both and I am looking forward to get back into the side," Vaas said.
Asked about Sri Lankan mystery spinner Ajantha Mendis, Vaas said he has a wonderful future ahead of him as he is contributing a lot to the team.
"He is bowling really well. He has just played four Tests and has 33 wickets to his credit. In ODIs, he has 55 wickets from 21 matches. He is improving day by day. I think he has a long future for Sri Lanka."
Vaas described the 1996 World Cup semi-final against India at Eden as the most memorable moment for him in Kolkata. "Winning the 1996 World Cup semi-final against India was really memorable. I still cherish it."
