Kolkata:
"It's a great achievement to win nine one day matches on a trot. As a captain, Dhoni has done an extremely great job. He is cool, calm and can inspire the whole team tremendously," said Wadekar, who was here to attend the release of a short film on cricket.
Asked whether Dhoni could be termed as the best Indian captain, Wadekar said, "In terms of record Ganguly is the best but Dhoni too is very good and as aggressive as Sourav."
"It is a good sign for Indian cricket that a number of young players have come up now and doing very well," Wadekar, who led India to historic wins at West Indies and England in 1971, said.
Complimenting the advent of Indian Premier League, Wadekar said the Twenty20 tournament has given young players an opportunity to play against renowned players from top cricket playing countries.
"We have seen a number of young Indian players are doing well in IPL."
Wadekar considered Indian coach Gary Kirsten better than his predecessor Greg Chappell
"The Australian (Chappell) used to think himself as the boss.
"Kirsten has developed the team more. He communicates with the team members better. Kirsten is a good planner of the game too," he said.
Former wicketkeeper Syed Kirmani, who was also present at the film release function, said the Indian one-day team is in a great form now and they have to maintain this.
