Asked how hopeful he was that Suarez would stay, Gerrard admitted he did not know how the saga would conclude but said he was optimistic he would not leave for a domestic rival. He also said that he would hate to see the 26-year-old striker depart.

London: Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard dealt a blow to Arsenal's pursuit of Luis Suarez on Tuesday by declaring that his unsettled team-mate will not be allowed to join another English club.

Arsenal have had two bids for the Uruguayan rejected and Suarez has been made to train on his own by Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers after accusing the club of breaking promises by refusing to let him leave.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of England's friendly against Scotland on Wednesday, Gerrard said he would hate to see the 26-year-old striker depart.
