New Delhi: Euro 2012 has been quite a ride till now. Here, there and everywhere. The semi finals are half way through and predictions are madly doing the rounds. Psychic animals haven't taken to Paul and have rather disappointed. Three of the top favourites, well almost, made it to the final four. Spain edged out Portugal into the finals of the prestigious event.
Frankly speaking, France were never given a chance this year despite making it to the last eight, and neither did they deserve one. The major disappointment was Netherlands, though they did their packing pretty early. It was down to the fight between Italy and England. And the country whose professional league is probably the most followed, were rather pedestrian on a demanding day in the quarters. The Azzurri, loathed for their style of play, did what they are the best at.
Going by the results till now, only the brains have done the talking this Euro. Germany have edged out all other teams in the tournament - on skill, on form and on goals. Spain, though still the leader in FIFA rankings, did not start impressively but have found the correct combinations at the right time. Now that they have seen off the Portugal threat, Spain would be hoping for a 2008 encore. Portugal too did not look the part when Germany gave them a solid lesson in the first round but fortunately for them and football fans, Ronnie found his feet only to loose them back again against Spain. As for the English football fans, it was almost a writing on the wall that their quarter final match was going into penalties and then the outcome was next to obvious.
The heart thus has taken a backstage. Heart backed Netherlands, they bundled out. It also had feelings for Russia and Poland - one did some justice, the other axed their own feet. The poor thing then rooted for England who never turned up in the first 120 minutes and then had the misfortune of a couple of misfiring "Ashleys" on the same day. It finally pinned hopes on Portugal, who promptly defied. Is it broken beyond repair or does it still hold some place of its own?
