Athens, Greece:Greece international central defender Sotiris Kyrgiakos says he intends to join Liverpool after receiving an offer from the Premier League club.
His current club AEK Athens confirmed Kyrgiakos' departure, leaving the 30-year-old out of the squad for Thursday's Europa League game against Romanian club Vaslui.
Kyrgiakos announced the news on his website late on Tuesday and described his decision to move to England as "irrevocable."
"This is the biggest challenge of my career. I have accepted Liverpool's proposal," the player wrote.
The 1.92-meter (6-foot-3) defender moved back to Greece last year after three seasons at Glasgow Rangers and Eintracht Frankfurt.
In a statement Wednesday, AEK said a final deal with Liverpool had not yet been reached, but said: "We respect his decision and have repeatedly stated that we never keep any player against his will for whatever reason."
It added: "The timing of the departure of Sotiris Kyrgiakos ... came at the worst possible moment for our club."
Greece' league championship starts this weekend, with AEK facing champion Olympiakos on Sunday.
