The Indian Football Association today accused Brazilian side Palmeiras of instigating the violence in the abandoned IFA Shield final tie against East Bengal on October 7. Briefing newspersons after watching the video replay of the match, IFA Joint Secretary Ranjit Gupta said, "The footage has only confirmed our earlier hunch. That it was Palmeiras who began the trouble." Members of the Shield tournament committee viewed the footage during the day to ascertain ground realities before taking a final decision on the fate of the match on Friday. The tournament committee, which earlier met on Monday, failed to arrive at a decision, describing the reports of Match Commissioner K M Krishnamurthy and referee P Bhaskar as 'inadequate'. It then decided to watch the video recording of the incident before giving its verdict. The final had to be abandoned 35 minutes into the first half after the two teams came to blows at the Salt Lake stadium. The Brazilian team was leading by a goal when play was stopped. Several Brazilians and East Bengal's Jo Paul Ancheri, Jackson Egyopyong, Dipankar Roy and Anit Ghosh were injured in the clashes and subsequent police action. Palmeiras had already declared themselves champions and left the city with a symbolic trophy purchased from the local market. The Brazilian club had also threatened to lodge a complaint with world football's governing body FIFA. Not to be left behind, East Bengal have also demanded that they be declared champions.
