Old Trafford:

Fabian Barthez had a night to forget as Deportivo La Coruna completed a Champions League double over Manchester United at Old Trafford on Wednesday. United's keeper gifted the Spanish side a goal in each half to leave Sir Alex Ferguson's team reflecting on yet another uncertain defensive display. The stage seemed set for another dominant United display when van Nistelrooy opened the scoring in the seventh minute. Some good work by Giggs down the middle paid off giving United a 1-0 lead. United almost doubled their lead when Giggs burst down to left and fired in a low cross for Van Nistelrooy. The Dutchman made contact at full stretch only to balloon the ball over the bar. Deportivo equalised in the 36th minute. Brown looked to have cleared any danger when dispossessing Sergio as he bore down on goal but the United defender and Barthez both let the ball run loose and Sergio stole in for the simplest of tap-ins. A minute later Deportivo were ahead when Tristan rose unmarked in the area to head home a Pedro Duscher cross, giving the Spanish side a 2-1 lead. The Old Trafford crowd fell silent but within two minutes United were level. Van Nistelrooy finished with an exquisite chip over Molina from the tightest of angles. But on the hour, Barthez came sliding out of his area only to miss the ball allowing Tristan a clear shot at the goal and that sealed it for Deportivo who took the game 3-2 to Manchester.
