Barcelona defeated Liverpool 3-1 on Tuesday in their Champions League showdown, establishing the Catalans as early favorites to win Europe's top club trophy. Liverpool haven't lost their last 14 matches and riding on that confidence they had the first chance after just three minutes. Barcelona replied a minute later with a nice free kick by Rivaldo, but Jerzy Dudek was upto it. In the 27th minute and England's wonder boy Micheal Owen showed some great touch as Liverpool took the lead. Thirteen minutes later and Emile Hesky could have doubled the hosts lead, but his shot was cleared off the line by a Barca defender. Barcelona had the firepower to equalise and in the 41st minute a great volley by Patrick Kluivert saw the Spanish giants get back on level terms. Kluivert could have scored his second of the match after a great through ball by Mark Overmars, but Dudek pulled off a superb save. Owen should have given the reds the lead upsound. Instead it was Barcelona who went ahead after 65 minutes. A cracking shot by Fabio Rochemback left Dudek with no chance. Liverpool should have appealed for an off side, and that cost them as Overmars reached a long ball and beat Dudek to score the final goal, as Barcelona scored a convincing 3-1 win over Liverpool.
