Brazil scraped into the World Cup in the final game of a campaign in which they used four coaches and lost an unprecedented six of their 18 matches including defeats to Chile, Bolivia, Paraguay and Ecuador. Deadly sports And players in Kabul were celebrating a victory of a different kind. Football is being played here on the same ground that was used for public executions during the Taliban regime. The game was banned during the Taliban's rule apart from special occasions when the players were allowed to play the game wearing Taliban approved outfits - trousers and full sleeved t-shirts. Beckham in the running The nominees for the football world player of the year are out and England captain David Beckham is one of the contenders. If he wins he could be the first Brit to do so since the award was instituted in 1991. Portugal and Real Madrid's Luis Figo is also one of the three nominees. The award will be announced on December 17. And Raul, another player from Real Madrid rounds off the list. Interestingly all three players played a major role in their respective countries qualifying for the World Cup.
