International striker Fernando Morientes scored a goal in each half on Saturday as Real Madrid gave a patchy display to beat Sevilla 2-1 at home in the opening match of the 13th round of the La Liga. The champions suffered a late scare as Moises Garcia pulled a goal back for the visitors 15 minutes from time, but held on to take their fifth win in 13 games in what has been a stuttering start to their title defence. Spanish league leaders Deportivo La Coruna entertained lowly Real Sociedad and the hosts were stunned in the eighth minute. Midfielder Xabie Alonso with a thunderous shot from 30 metres out helped Sociedad take the lead. Deportivo, the top scorers in the division, came back with the equalizer in the 36th minute. Dutch striker Roy Makaay came up with a brilliant turn and shot that completely beat the Sociedad keeper. Makaay made it 2-1 for Deportivo, after his first effort was blocked but his second beat the Real keeper. In the move of the match, Deportivo strung together a series of passes before Brazilian midfielder Emerson's cross found Makaay, and his header found the back of the net as Deportivo won the match 3-1. The win for Deportivo meant they stay at top of the La liga with 26 points, ahead of Alaves, who also registered a 1-0 win against Celta Vigo. Barcelona are in third place with 23 points after they were held to a goalless draw by Las Palmas. Defending champions Real Madrid find themselves at seventh place with 19 points.
