Kuala Lumpur:
The Iraqi national football team will return to international competition during Asian Cup qualifiers in October after reassembling following the war in its country. "Iraq will make their much awaited comeback when they meet Bahrain at the National Stadium in Kuala Lumpur on October 8," the Asian Football Confederation said today. Iraq and Bahrain have been drawn in the same group as Malaysia and Myanmar in the qualifying round for the 2004 Asian Cup. The two teams that top the group will advance to the tournament, to be held in China. The Iraqi national team was once considered an Asian powerhouse and took part in the 1986 World Cup finals in Mexico, where it lost all three of its games but allowed only four goals. Iraq is also scheduled to play two matches in November in Australia in another move to put its international programme back on track. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
