Newcastle United won their ninth consecutive English Premier League home game on Wednesday, beating Liverpool 1-0 at St. James' Park. Bobby Robson's Toon army took the lead from a Laurent Robert free kick, which was deflected in by Milan Baros and held on for a deserved victory. Stuttering Liverpool were looking to get back to winning ways at St. James' Park on Wednesday, but would have to overcome a Newcastle United side who have been in impressive form at home this season. Gerard Houllier's injury hit team fell behind after just 13 minutes when Laurent Robert's free kick took a deflection off Milan Baros and beat goalkeeper Chris Kirkland. The only first half shot the visitors could muster in reply was a long range effort from Steven Gerrard that was saved by Newcastle 'keeper Shay Given. The English Premier League's joint top scorer Alan Shearer threatened five minutes before the half-time break from a free kick, but his effort curled wide of the target. Liverpool had enough problems already - with Michael Owen, Danny Murphy and Emile Heskey missing through injury - but things got worse for the Reds when Salif Diao was sent off for a second bookable offence. Neil Mellor made his league debut as a second half substitute and he went closest to equalising for the visitors - first with a header from Gerrard's free kick that Given saved in the 67th minute. And then with a shot that was deflected over the Newcastle crossbar by Aaron Hughes four minutes later. He could have earned a penalty earlier in the attack after he was pulled down by Olivier Bernard. Goal scorer Robert went closest for the home side in the second half and only a slight deflection from Vladimir Smicer stopped his powerful shot hitting the target. Another chance fell to Shola Ameobi with six minutes to play following a surging run from Craig Bellamy - but Liverpool captain Sami Hyypia stretched out a foot to block the shot from the Newcastle substitute. Bobby Robson's side won 1-0 and move into fourth place, while Liverpool have now failed to win in any of their last ten league games. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
