Imphal:
Karnataka earned full points getting past Punjab 2-0 in a Group C quarter final league match of the 58th National Football Championship for Santosh Trophy in Imphal. Mahendra Mani scored the first goal in the 22nd minute while S Sunil increased the margin eight minutes later to give a 2-0 lead to the winners at half time of the fast paced encounter at the Khuman Lampak Stadium. While both the teams went into the attack mode right from the kick off, Karnataka forwards with their better ball possession looked more dangerous when they penetrated the rival defence. Skipper SK Dayananda, who displayed some good soccer, could have scored the first goal in the 15th minute, but his powerful right footer was brilliantly saved by the Punjab custodian. Seven minutes later, Mani got a measured pass from Dayananda and drove home from close to make it 1-0 for Karnataka. Sunil made the scoreline 2-0 by latching on to a loose ball from the left flank. Karnataka, however, could have won by a bigger margin but for their forwards who missed a number of chances, particularly in the second half. Although the Punjab forwards came close to the target a couple of times, lack of coordination and planning proved their undoing. (PTI)Topics mentioned in this article
