Seoul, South Korea:
The 23 members of the South Korean World Cup squad have each earned at least 300 million won (US$ 230,000) in bonuses so far for reaching the semifinals. The Korea Football Association promised 100 million won (US$ 76,900) each if the team advanced to the second round, and the same amount for every subsequent win. South Korea cleared the first round with two wins over Portugal and Poland, and a tie with the United States. It won over Italy in the second round and Spain in the quarterfinals. Confidence-charged South Koreans are hoping for two more bonuses. Tjeu face three-time champion Germany in Tuesday's semifinal in Seoul. If they win, they will kick off against the winner of Brazil vs. Turkey semifinal in the championship match in Yokohama, Japan, on Sunday. Coach Guus Hiddink will also get an unspecified amount in bonuses under a contract signed in late 2000. The Dutchman, whose contract expires after the finals, is silent about his next destination. Hiddink is a national hero, and South Koreans want him to remain in charge of their national team. Reaching the round of 16 has been a dream for South Korea, which had not won a match during its five previous trips to the World Cup. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
