London:
David O'Leary's Leeds ushered in the New Year in celebratory style over West Ham, as Mark Viduka and Robbie Fowler fired Leeds back to the top of the Barclaycard Premier League for the first time in six weeks. The Hammers struggled as Viduka's double in the first seven minutes helped the homeside to a 3-0 victory. Leeds United were looking for a third successive win when they hosted West Ham United. And Leeds got off to a stunning start, Mark Viduka scoring in the third minute with a left foot volley into the top left hand corner of the net from 6 yards for his tenth goal of the season. Three minutes later Viduka was at it again scoring his second goal of the match as Leeds went ahead 2-0. West Ham's Joe Cole nearly pulled one back for the visitors but his drive minutes later was just wide. Six minutes from half time and Viduka nearly completed his hattrick, but his over head kick was well saved by the West Ham keeper. Soon after half time, Robbie Fowler had made it 3-0 for Leeds with a great chip shot to the delight of the home crowd. West Ham got a final chance a few minutes from time but John Moncur put the ball just wide of the post, Leeds holding on to win 3-0 for their third consecutive victory. Liverpool vs Bolton Wanderers Liverpool played the Bolton Wanderers and the first half of the game proved to be frustrating for both sides. But the Reds got the break in the 50th minute, Steven Gerrard chipping the ball over the keeper to give Liverpool the lead. England Manager Sven-Goran Eriksson watching from the stands would have been pleased with Gerard's effort. Bolton continued to look for the equaliser and in the 81st minute, Kevin Nolan found the back of the net as the visitors finally were rewarded for their perseverance. The match ended in a 1-1 draw. Bolton, who have plunged down the Premiership, added another impressive result to their list. The 3-0 win for Leeds means they are back on top of the table, two points ahead of Arsenal, whose match against Leicester city had to be postponed because of a frozen pitch. Newcastle drop to third, with Manchester United coming in fifth with 36 points.Topics mentioned in this article
