City:It was one of the biggest matches of the English Premier League season as Liverpool travelled to Old Trafford to play Manchester United. United were on an eight-match winning streak while Liverpool came into the game with just one point from their last eight games. But Manchester United had lost their last four meetings with their fiercest rivals Liverpool. However, it was United who had the first real chance in the 16th minute. Ryan Giggs dragged his shot wide of the far post. Nine minutes later and Paul Scholes could have put United in front, but his long-range drive whizzed past Jerzy Dudek's right-hand post. Liverpool's wonder kid Michael Owen nearly made United pay on the break, but his effort was off target. Both sides went into the break with the game evenly poised. After failing to score in the first half, United keeper Fabien Barthez took it upon himself to change the course of the match, but thankfully his charge up field did not result in any serious damage this time around. John Arne Riise who had already made United suffer earlier in the season at Anfield, nearly did it again with a cracking volley off a corner. Barthez's effort was right on the ball. Five minutes from time, a great chip from Steven Gerrad found the feet of Danny Murphy who lobbed the ball over Barthez to put Liverpool in front. United immediately went on the attack and it nearly paid off but for a brilliant save by Dudek. Liverpool held on to the 1-0 lead to register their fifth consecutive win over their fiercest rival. They are now just two points behind Manchester United who still manage keeping the top spot, in what is looking like the most exciting championship race in years.
