The Rangers beat their Glasgow rivals Celtic to reach the final of the Scottish League Cup. Then against the run of play, the Rangers stunned Celtic by opening the scoring. Peter Lovenkrands slotted the ball into the far corner with just seconds to go before the half time whistle. But Celtic came back with the equaliser in the 73rd minute. After a goalmouth scramble, Bobo Balde finally managed to find the back of the net. Rangers got the chance to take the lead three minutes later when Balde fouled Lovenkrands in the box and a penalty was awarded. However, Arveladze made a mess of the spot kick, hitting the cross bar before it went out. An extra-time goal from Bert Konterman gave Rangers a 2-1 win and booked it a place in the final of the Scottish League Cup.
