In a crucial game in Group B of the Champions League, FC Barcelona got the all-important away win in Turkey against Galatasary. Luis Enrique scored the only goal of the game after the keeper failed to collect a Fabio Rochemback shot. The win saw Barcelona come out to top the toughest group in the second phase. Also, this is the first time the Reds reached the knockout stage since the infamous 1985 final. Meanwhile in Group A, Manchester United seemed to be continuing their great form against Portuguese champions Boavista. They were 2-0 ahead before the break. Lauren Blanc and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer were the scorers. David Beckham added a late penalty to continue his goal-scoring spree for United. The 1999 champions would go on to a comfortable 3-0 win to top Group A. Defending champions Bayern Munich were surprisingly a goal down to Nantes in the 54th minute. Hassan Ahamada was the scorer. Bayern came back with two goals from Jens Jermies and Claudio Pizzaro to register a 2-1 win. Bayern have to settle for second place behind United on goal difference. That means the German side could face favourites Real Madrid in the last eight.
Liverpool win You'll never walk alone is the Liverpool anthem. But they had been walking alone for the last five months without their inspirational manager Gerard Houllier. The Frenchman however returned on a crucial night for the Reds at Anfield when they played AS Roma in a do-or-die battle for a place in the last eight of the Champions League. Liverpool were playing at home without star striker Michael Owen, but were with Houllier, who was back for the first time in five months after a heart surgery. And he couldn't have received a better welcome back present. Jari Litmanen's 7th-minute penalty and Emile Heskey's header in the 64th ensured a 2-0 win over the Italian champions. Liverpool also managed to break a 30-year-old winless streak against Italian sides at Anfield.
