The German team was given a hero's welcome when they returned to their team hotel following their quarterfinal win over Argentina. The World Cup hosts booked a place in the semi-finals by defeating Argentina in a penalty shootout after the scores were locked 1-1 at the end of extra time. Hundreds of fans waited outside their team's hotel in Berlin after the match, keen to catch a glimpse of a group of players who are fast becoming national heroes. The Germans relentlessly wore down Argentina, scoring an equalising goal in the 80th minute to take the match into extra time. Penalty shootout A penalty shootout was required after the score remained 1-1. The home side won 4-2 on penalties, with goalkeeper Jens Lehmann making two crucial saves. Germany's coach Juergen Klinsmann was first off the team bus, signing autographs for delighted supporters. Striker Miroslav Klose, who's goal took the match into extra time, also stopped to sign autographs. Germany is now just two wins away from winning the World Cup for the fourth time.
