Manchester United striker Ruud Van Nistelrooy will not be going to the World Cup but some sort of a consolation prize has come his way after he was voted the PFA player of the year. He has scored 32 goals this season. His team wasn't playing this weekend but their hopes of a fourth consecutive league title are looking tougher by the day. Liverpool travelled away to Sunderland hoping to overtake Manchester United in the table. In the 55th minute, Liverpool took the lead after a great ball from Nicholas Anelka saw Micheal Owen chip Thomas Sorensen in the Sunderland goal. Ten minutes later, Niall Quin's shot brought out a great save from Jerzy Dudek in goal. Six minutes later, Anelka could have wrapped up the points but his shot came off the post and the final score stayed at 1-0 to Liverpool. Derby County played Newcastle United at home and into the second half and Malcolm Christie scored for the rams after some build up. Seven minutes later, they were 2-0 to Derby after an acrobatic volley from Lee Morris. But with just 18 minutes left, Laurent Robert pulled one back for Newcastle with a stunning free kick. Four minutes later, the score was equalized at 2-2. In the last minute of the game Newcastle stole all three points as Lomano Tresor Lua-Lua converted Nolberto Solano's pass from close range with 3-2 as the final score. Leeds United travelled to Villa Park to take on Aston Villa. Twenty-nine minutes into the game, Leeds was in front after some neat passing between David Batty and Robbie Keane allowed Mark Viduka to score with the outside of his right foot. Aston Villa lost its last chance to score as Hitzlserger's shot was brilliantly saved by Nigel Martyn who managed to keep the ball out of play. The score was 1-0 to Leeds United.Topics mentioned in this article
