China was scheduled to host this year's World Cup until the SARS outbreak there led FIFA officials to move the tournament to the United States. While the new hosts have prospered, Thursday wasn't a day to remember for the Chinese. Unfancied Australia took a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute through Heather Garriock. Ranked fourth in the world to Australia's 15th, China put the pressure on and dominated ball possession. But the 'Matildas' defence held firm. That was until Bai Jie made the breakthrough in the 46th minute. It finished 1-1 at Carson's Home Depot Center - a morale-booster for Australia - a wake-up call for the Chinese as they fell two points behind Russia at the top of Group D. (AP)
