Rio De Janeiro:
Juan netted a first-half goal and Flamengo defeated rival Vasco 1-0 to win its second Brazilian Cup title on Wednesday. With the victory, 3-0 on aggregate, Flamengo automatically earns a spot in next year's Copa Libertadores, Latin America's most important club tournament. Flamengo, which will play in the Copa Libertadores for the first time since 2002, had won the first leg 2-0 last week and needed only a draw at Maracana stadium to clinch the title - its first since 1990. It was the Flamengo's first significant national title since it won the 1992 Brazilian league. Juan scored the winner in the 27th minute with a one-timer from the top of area. He fired a low left-footed shot past Vasco goalkeeper Cassio. Vasco played a man down since the 16th after striker Valdir Papel was sent off for a hard foul. The result in front of nearly 45,000 fans at Maracana gave Flamengo, Brazil's most popular club, its seventh national title. Flamengo reached the final by eliminating Ipatinga of Minas Gerais state, while Vasco got past Rio de Janeiro rival Fluminense. Flamengo is the only Rio de Janeiro club to have won the Brazilian Cup. It was runner-up three times - in 1997, 2003 and 2004. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
