Birmingham:
A James Beattie penalty gave Southampton a 1-0 win over Aston Villa in the Premier League on Monday - after Villa goalkeeper Peter Enckelman was sent off. Beattie's penalty in the first minute of the second half was awarded by referee Steve Bennett after Saints striker Brett Omerod was held back in the area. However, television replays suggested it was Villa defender Alpay, not Enckelman who committed the foul. Enckelman collided with Omerod after Alpay. Enckelman was replaced by Stefan Postma who failed to stop Beattie's strike. It was Southampton's first away win of the season. "It was a brilliant result," said Southampton 'keeper Antti Niemi, who stopped several attempts from Villa forwards Darius Vassell and Gareth Barry. Liverpool leads the Premier League with 24 points, one more than Arsenal. Tottenham is third with 19 points, followed by Manchester United with 18. Southampton moved up to 12th with 13 points through the win, with Aston Villa in 14th position with 10 points. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
