Rio de Janeiro:
Fluminense fired coach Oswaldo de Oliveira on Monday, a day after the team lost 3-0 to Ponte Preta and fell to sixth place in the Brazilian league. If Fluminense remained at its lowest point in the standings this season, it will miss out on the Copa Libertadores next year. Only the top three first-division teams qualify for the tournament, while the fourth-placed team can win a berth in a qualifying round. Oliveira will be replaced by interim coach Josue Teixeira, the club said on its web site. Considered one of Brazil's top coaches, Oliveira, led Corinthians to the national title in 1999 and the FIFA club world championship in 2000. He joined Fluminense in April and coached the team to 10 wins, six draws, and five losses. Oliveira blamed the team's sponsor Unimed for pressuring the club to fire him because he planned to bench Serbian star midfielder Dejan Petkovic, who has played poorly and missed a penalty kick against Ponte Preta. Unimed pays the salaries of several of Fluminense's top players, including Petkovic. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
