Manchester United Manager Alex Ferguson has criticized England's Football Association for its treatment of national skipper David Beckham in the buildup to the World Cup. Ferguson was quoted in English newspapers Sunday as admitting he was unhappy Beckham was rushed back in time to make England's pre-tournament trip to Dubai. He said the FA's decision to hurry the player back after he broke a bone in his foot was the reason he was not at his best in Japan and Korea. "I personally thought David Beckham should not have gone to Dubai --that was a mistake. He wanted to go but he should have stayed behind at our place and trained. We tried to keep him back, but they wouldn't move on it," Ferguson said. "He tired badly in England's first game and that was something I never thought I would see with Beckham because he has a great engine," he added. Ferguson also questioned the tactics used by England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson, who came in for some criticism for the team's negative play. England reached the quarter finals where they lost 1-2 to eventual champions Brazil.(AP)Topics mentioned in this article
