Turin:
Fiorentina improved their points tally to minus four in Italy's Serie A following a one-nil win at Torino on Wednesday. It was the home team who started the brighter of the two, with Roberto Stellone coming close to giving them the lead after just two minutes. He fired in a great left-footed shot and it was only just off target. Fiorentina turned thing around and soon broke the deadlock. In the 13th minute, Martin Jorgensen latched on to a pass from the edge of the area and easily slid the ball past ex-AC Milan goalkeeper Christian Abbiati. Twenty minutes later the visitors could have been two ahead if this shot by Riccardo Montolivo had been on target. But the ball hit the crossbar and at the break Fiorentina were just a single goal to the good. The visitors had few chances in the second half as Torino pressed forward, looking for an equaliser. Ten minutes after the restart, an Ivan Franceschini header from a corner went just wide, much to his frustration. With some six minutes remaining Masashi Oguro came close, though under pressure from the Fiorentina defenders his shot again went just the wrong side of the post. A minute later it was Jacopo Balestri who tried his luck from the wing. He was denied by a great block from Sebastien Frey in goal. Deep into injury time Elvis Abbruscato produced a wonderful strike from the edge of the area but once again however Frey got his hand to the shot, and at the final whistle Fiorentina were one-nil winners. The result means that Fiorentina now lie tied with Reggina at the bottom of the table with minus four points - they are still paying off the penalty imposed on them for their role in the recent match fixing scandal. Torino lie 14th with six points from eight matches. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
