With four defeats in their last four French Ligue 1 games, Marseille travelled to Lille hoping to arrest their worrying slide. After a tightly-contested opening, the first real opportunity of merit came midway through the first half. Lille defender Mathieu Chalme almost glancing Samir Nasri's free-kick into his own net - Chalme relieved to see his 'keeper Tony Sylva tip the ball over. But right on the stroke of half-time, the home side took the lead. Mathieu Bodmer playing a neat exchange of passes with Jean Makoun before despatching a pinpoint shot into the corner of the net. Lille should have doubled their advantage immediately after the restart - Yohan Cabaye's trickery set up Mathieu Robail, but the forward blasted over with the goal begging. But nothing could rouse Marseille from their stupor - indeed, Claude Puel's side would have scored a second but for fine goalkeeping from Cedric Carrasso. The stopper saved well on a number of occasions - but Lille still easily good enough for their first home victory over Marseille since October 2002. (AP)
