Stockholm:
Arsenal midfielder Fredrik Ljungberg received the Golden Ball award as Sweden's player of the year on Monday. Ljungberg, who also won the award in 2002, helped Sweden advance to the second round in the World Cup in Germany by heading in the winning goal against Paraguay in group play. He was also a leading figure when Arsenal reached the Champions League final, where it lost to FC Barcelona. "I am proud and humble to get this award," Ljungberg said. "If you look at the football year 2006, it was very eventful. ... If I should try to sum it up, the Champions League final left some deep marks. That felt heavy. But for me, the World Cup was the biggest event of the year." Former Barcelona striker Henrik Larsson earned a special award for scoring the greatest goal ever for the national team, with his diving header against Bulgaria in the 2004 European Championship. Lotta Schelin won the Diamond Ball as Sweden's best female player. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
