Sao Paolo:

Santos FC played host to Atletico Paranaense on Sunday at the Urbano Caldeira in a Campeonato Brasileiro fixture. The hosts played out a goalless draw in their opening match of the season against Goias, while the visitors lost 2-1 to Fluminense FC in their first game, so both teams were keen to get maximum points. This match was played behind closed doors but the lack of fan support did not mean it would end up being a dull affair. The opening half was action packed, the first chance falling to the home side in the 10th minute. A great header from Reinaldo only just went wide of the far post as Santos showed their intent. A minute later the home side did score. The strike came from Antonio de Nigris, who picked up a back heel from his fellow Santos teammate, to slot the ball home for a one-nil lead. Atletico Paranaense however were also pressing forward. In the 23rd minute Evandro just failed to get on the end of an off target header, the ball just sailing wide of the post. And on the half hour, they were denied from an Alan Bahia free-kick following a great save from Fabio Costa in the Santos goal. At the other end of the pitch Cleber was performing equally as well, fending off a long range shot from Neto in the 34th minute. Santos came out fighting in the second half as they chased a second goal. Four minutes after the restart Cleber was once again called into action, pulling of a wonderful save - again - to deny Santos a chance to extend their lead. He just got a hand to the header from De Nigris, denying the striker his second goal of the night. A minute later the visitors came close to the equaliser, the shot from Evandro going just wide of the far post. Mid-way through the second half, the home side finally got the second goal they had been threatening to score. This time it came from Reinaldo, who with only the goalkeeper to beat, kept his cool to fire in the shot for the two-nil lead. The home side held on to that advantage to the whistle, to improve their record so far this season to one draw and one win. For the visitors however the start to the season has not been good - they are yet to get a point on the table following two defeats out of two matches played. (AP)
