Stade Gerland:
Bryan Bergougnoux and captain Sidney Govou both scored as Lyon beat Rennes 2-1 on Wednesday to open up a five point over Lille at the top Ligue 1 in France. Rennes finished the game with ten men after midfielder Etienne Didot was sent off nine minutes from time. The win gave Lyon 48 points while Lille are on 43 points after drawing 1-1 at Nice. Focus on goal The home side had the first clear sight on goal with Sidney Govou shooting just wide ten minutes in. But Rennes came even closer 15 minutes later as Toifilou Maoulida strode forward and clipped the woodwork with a fierce effort. The visitors performed well through the first period and it looked as if the teams would go in to the break with the game goalless. But two goals in a minute just before half-time transformed the match. The first came after a break down the left and a ball into Brian Bergougnoux whose mishit volley squirmed under the body of Rennes goalkeeper Andreas Isaksson. Just sixty seconds later, the visiting defence was caught out by another long ball and Govou rode his luck to force the ball home. Red card The visitors' cause wasn't helped when they were reduced to ten men nine minutes from time after midfielder Etienne Didot was shown a red card for a second bookable offence. Still, Rennes kept plugging away and Olivier Monterrubio scored a consolation with virtually the last kick of the game after some slack work by the home defence. But too little, too late and so, for the champions Lyon, a reassuring three points after the shock of that first defeat at the weekend. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
