Sao Paulo:
Nelsinho Baptista has resigned as coach of defending champion Santos after the team's fifth loss in six games. On Sunday, the club said Baptista quit the night before following Santos' 1-0 loss to minnow Brasiliense. "We were not satisfied with the results of our last matches," Baptista told Radio Globo. "I opted to leave now so Santos can try to recover with more tranquility." Baptista's replacement had not yet been announced. Winless streak The club, made famous by Pele in the late 1960s, is ninth in the 22-team Brazilian league standings with 56 points from 40 matches. Santos' winless streak is now at six matches. The two-time national champion hasn't won since beating Vasco 3-1 on 26 October. With two rounds left, the club can still qualify for next year's Copa Sudamericana. Baptista led Santos to three wins in 13 matches. The club lost seven times - including 7-1 to rival Corinthians - and drew three matches under him. Last week, Baptista blamed former coach Alexandre Tadeu Gallo for the team's struggles, saying he failed to hire the right players. Gallo was fired on 27 September with Santos fifth in the standings. Led by striker Robinho, now a Real Madrid player, Santos won the league in 2002 and 2004, and finished second in 2003. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
