Manchester United maintained their challenge for the English Premier League title with a comfortable 3-0 victory over bottom club West Ham United at Old Trafford. The victory lifted United to provisional second place in the table, level on points with champions Arsenal, who take on Tottenham Hotspur in Sunday's north London Derby. Manchester United were looking to maintain their good form against West Ham United, who arrived at Old Trafford as the bottom club in the English Premier League but were the last side to prevent a United victory, with a 1-1 draw at Upton Park on November 17. After that Sir Alex Ferguson's men had put together a six-match winning run. The Londoners resistance lasted only 15 minutes as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer put United ahead. Gary Neville delivered a tempting cross and Solskjaer's header took a deflection off defender Tomas Repka and left David James stranded. David Beckham was among the substitutes and two minutes after the opening goal the England captain was on his feet to applaud Juan Sebastian Veron, who made it 2-0. From a free-kick 25 metres out on the right, Beckham's usual territory, the Argentinian bent a curling shot inside the far-post. Glenn Roeder's team appeared as if they were going to be overrun and Ruud van Nistelrooy looked odds-on to make it 3-0 but the visitors' keeper did well to spread himself and block the shot. The same pattern was maintained in the second half and following good passing between John O'Shea and Ryan Giggs, van Nistelrooy was through on goal. James again came to the rescue. The game was over as a contest after 61 minutes when a patient build-up by United ended in Sebastien Schemmel unable to get out of the way of Gary Neville's cross and he ended up scoring an own goal. West Ham rarely threatened and their best chance was provided by a United player. Wes Brown powered a header from Scott Minto's cross towards his own goal and Fabien Barthez made the save of the match. The victory lifted United to provisional second place in the table, level on points with champions Arsenal, who take on Tottenham Hotspur in Sunday's north London derby.
