Middlesbrough:
Middlesbrough registered a 3-2 defeat to Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon in the first leg of their UEFA Cup last 16 tie at the Riverside Stadium on Thursday. The game only sprang into life after the break, with three goals for the visitors in the space of 16 minutes. The Boro defence gave Pedro Barbosa far too much room in front of goal in the 49th minute and the 34-year-old Peruvian midfielder finished with ease. Exciting play Another Barbosa effort fell to Sporting's lively winger Roudolphe Douala, whose subsequent cross was met with a header from Liedson to make it 2-0. It was the Brazilian striker's eighth goal of the campaign. With 15 minutes to go it seemed all over when Liedson turned provider, picking out Douala at the far post for the easiest of tap-ins. However, with 12 minutes left, a free-kick was lofted into the Sporting box and substitute Joseph-Desire Job gave the home fans something to shout about with a spectacular volley that flew past Ricardo in the Sporting goal. Later, with four minutes left on the clock Ricardo spilled another free-kick from a similar position, the ball fell to Chris Riggott and the 24 year-old defender fired in through a crowd of players. The game ended 3-2. Middlesbrough's first European campaign in their 128-year history hangs by a thread, but they still have an outside chance in next week's second leg.
