Buenos Aires:

Belgrano of Cordoba upset Boca Juniors 1-0 Sunday, delaying until at least next week the Buenos Aires club from claiming a record third-straight Argentine league title. Boca remained in first with 44 points, three ahead of runner-up Estudiantes with one round remaining. Only River Plate and another of Boca's crosstown rivals, Racing, have ever won three consecutive first-division titles. Boca appeared flat Sunday at Cordoba, where Belgrano's Franco Peppino scored with a left-footed cross in the 61st minute for the only goal of the match. Belgrano goalkeeper German Montoya thwarted Boca's forwards, who failed to finish on several chances. Estudiantes, meanwhile, drew 2-2 with Argentinos Juniors to pull within three points of Boca after 18 rounds. Goal difference Boca, which has a plus-25 goal difference, will return home for the final round next week, facing eighth-place Lanus, while Estudiantes, which has a plus-21 goal difference, will be at home against fifth-place Arsenal. Argentinos equalized on a header by Choy Gonzalo in the second minute of injury time to rally for the draw with Estudiantes. A header by Jorge Quinteros in the 25th minute gave Argentinos the lead, but goals by Mariano Pavone and Sebastian Veron in the 79th and 89th minutes appeared to give Estudiantes the victory. Elsewhere, Nueva Chicago defeated River Plate 2-1 at River's Monumental stadium in Buenos Aires. River is seven points behind Boca in third place and already had been eliminated from the title chase. Ernesto Farias gave River the lead with a header in the second minute before Federico Higuain and Jorge Martinez scored second-half goals to rally Nuevo Chicago. River fans, irate over what they saw as their club's lackluster performance, whistled and jeered their players and coach in the final minutes. Elsewhere, Gimnasia of Jujuy beat Rosario Central 1-0 Sunday. (AP)
