Catania, Sicily:

Calcio Catania needed no extra motivation to beat Udinese in Serie A on Sunday with a Champions League spot within their grasp. Last weekend's 2-2 draw at Ascoli allowed Pasquale Marino's men to go move into fifth place on 20 points. The Rossoblu, who were undefeated at the Stadio Angelo Massimino, failed to break down a stubborn Udinese in an undistinguished first half. Udinese, whose away form this season has been poor - they have taken just five points on their travels - thought they'd taken the lead in the 55th minute when Antonio Di Natale turned in a pass from Vincenzo Iaquinta, but the referee disallowed the goal for offside. The home side, who had amassed 20 points from 14 games, were struggling and Di Natale was proving a potent threat for the visitors, but on 65 minutes, he was unable to hit the target. Break deadlock Catania, who only gained promotion to the top flight in the summer, finally broke the deadlock in the 68th minute when, with the outside of his boot, Giuseppe Colucci bent the ball towards the far post and Gionatha Spinesi headed home his eighth goal of the season. Udinese, who could have drawn level on points with their hosts with victory, pushed for the equaliser, and, once again, Di Natale was at the heart of the opportunity. His drive from the edge of the area was superbly turned away by Armando Pantanelli. With two minutes remaining, Catania had a scare when a flowing move from the Udinese half resulted in Iaquinta beating the offside trap, but firing just wide of the far post. Catania held on for a 1-0 win and fourth place, which would see them in the Champions League next year if they can maintain that position come the end of the season.(AP)
