New Delhi:
The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has sacked coach Syed Nayemuddin and the entire technical staff. Nayemuddin was into his third stint as national coach, which lasted just six months before an embarrassing loss to Yemen cost him his job. In all fairness, the Federation gave Nayemuddin whatever he wanted, even suspending the National Football League so the players could prepare for the Asian Qualifiers. But the 6-0 loss to Japan followed by the 3-0 loss to Yemen meant that the AIFF lost patience. The players too had complained about the coach's training methods, and they reportedly did not approve of his prayer sessions before each practice. Unconfirmed reports have also indicated that Nayemuddin tried to force a player affected with jaundice to play against Yemen. The AIFF is now hunting for its fourth coach in less than four years, and it is being indicated that a foreign replacement will be sought. But judging by the last experiment with Stephen Constantine, the problem may not be with the coach or with the players, but rather with the way football is run in the country.Topics mentioned in this article
