London:
Wayne Rooney scored his sixth goal in eight games as Manchester United beat rival Manchester City 2-0 to keep in touch with English Premier League-leading Chelsea. The victory was United's 13th league win in 15 matches and kept it nine points behind the front-runner. Gary Neville's cross from the right was tapped in by Rooney in the 68th minute. United's second was a City own-goal in the 76th. A Rooney cross into the area was chipped into the net off the far post by defender Richard Dunne, with City goalkeeper David James stranded. City's best chance was in the first half, when Steve McManaman missed from close range after a Shaun-Wright Phillips cross. "I don't think it was our best performance over the last two to three months, but we were deserved winners," United manager Alex Ferguson said. Ferguson was also pleased with 19-year-old Rooney's performance. Chelsea beat Everton 1-0 on Saturday to improve to 68 points. United is second with 59, five ahead of Arsenal and 11 more than Everton. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
