Stuttgart:
VfB Stuttgart moved back into third place in Germany's Bundesliga following an unconvincing 1-0 home win over bottom club SC Freiburg on Sunday. Freiburg, who are bottom of the standings with just 16 points from 25 games, started well. However, their defensive frailties were exposed in the 20th minute when Marcus Babbel headed in his second goal of the season, following a corner by Belarussian Aleksandr Hleb. Moment of hesitation That was the 54th goal Freiburg have conceded so far this season and they nearly let in another on 33 minutes, but the legs of goalkeeper Richard Golz denied Brazilian striker Cacau. The Frieburg defence is nothing if not suspect and Youssef Mohamad didn't help their cause by giving the ball away in his own half. Kevin Kuranyi nearly capitalised with a well struck shot, but Golz dived at full stretch to parry. Stuttgart continued to dominate in the second half, but nearly paid for a moment of hesitation. Dennis Aogo whipped in a cross from the left and the ball took a deflection off Croatian defender Boris Zivkovic. Samuel Koejoe lunged, but missed and the ball rebounded off the post before Stuttgart cleared. The home side could have killed off the game in the 78th minute, when a long ball up field by goalkeeper Timo Hildebrand was flicked on and Cacau forced Golz into another fine save. Stuttgart ran out 1-0 winners though and now trail the league leaders by five points with eight games remaining. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
