Middlesbrough's UEFA Cup adventure continued on Wednesday as they welcomed p re-tournament favourites Lazio to the Riverside. Bouyed by an impressive win away at Aigaleo (of Greece) in their Group E opener, and also a solid start in the English Premiership, 'Boro's confidence was high heading into the game. However, they could easily have gone a goal behind after just seven minutes - Antonio Filippini shooting just wide of Mark Schwarzer's post. But less than 10 minutes later, the home side took the lead through a fine strike from Boudewijn Zenden. Stewart Downing's cross was only half-cleared by Fernando Couto, and the ball deflected off Mark Viduka to Zenden, who lashed in a spectacular volley. It was the Dutchman's second goal in two games following his winner at Charlton on Saturday. Then, in the 71st minute, the crucial goal which saw Boro seal the three points arrived. A Downing corner was cleared to Ray Parlour, but the former England international sprayed the ball back out to the right for Downing, who then delivered an inch-perfect cross for Zenden to head home past Fabrizio Casazza. Lazio made to look like the Group E minnows then, while Middlesbrough have now firmly announced themselves on the European stage. (AP)
