Mexico City:
Mexico defeated the United States 2-1 in their CONCACAF World Cup qualifying group match in Mexico City on Sunday. Striker Jared Borgetti and Antonio Naelson scored four minutes apart in the first half to set up Mexico's win. 100-thousand people packed the Azteca stadium in Mexico City for Sunday's World Cup qualifier between Mexico and the United States. Mexico dominates play The home side dominated from the kick-off, and were eventually rewarded in the 30th minute. Salvador Carmona's cross from the right found Jaime Lozano unmarked at the far post. His headed cross picked out Jared Borgetti, whose own header beat US goalkeeper Kasey Keller. The rattled American defence conceded a second goal just four minutes later. A long ball from Cuauhtemoc Blanco was headed by Borgetti to Antonio Nelson, whose cool finish gave Keller no chance. US fights back The United States were more impressive in the second half and got themselves back into the match in the 59th minute. US captain Landon Donovan delivered a neat pass to Eddie Lewis, whose powerful left foot strike cut the deficit to one goal. But Mexico held on to win 2-1, taking them to the top of the CONCACAF World Cup qualifying group with two wins from as many matches. Mexico has six points, Guatemala four, Costa Rica and the Americans three each, Panama one, and Trinidad and Tobago none. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
