St Petersburg:

Zenit made an impressive start to their UEFA Cup game with Sevilla. Alexander Kerzhakov threatened in the fourth minute, but shot wide of the target after a well timed run across the face of the Sevilla defence. Despite struggling to get to grips with the freezing St Petersburg conditions the visitors were just inches away from going ahead in the 9th minute. Julio Baptista's header looped over goalkeeper Vyacheslav Malafeev, but his effort came back off the goal post. Zenit took a deserved lead in the 35th minute though. Vladimir Bystrov went down in the Sevilla penalty area while attempting to latch on to Daniel Chirita's pass. The ball fell kindly for Andrei Arshavin, who fired in from an acute angle. Zenit failed to dominate the second half as they had the first, although Igor Denisov wasn't too far off target with his 66th minute shot. Sevilla began to impose themselves as the match wore on and substitute Carlitos forced an excellent reaction save from Malafeev in the 71st minute after good work from Jesuli on the left wing. Zenit failed to deal with the resulting corner - goal scorer Arshavin making a woeful clearance - and Carlitos crossed the ball to an unmarked Julio Baptista, who couldn't miss from six yards out. The match ended in a 1-1 draw, which would see Zenit remain at the top of the Group H standings, one place ahead of Sevilla. However, French side Lille could move into first place in the five team group with a win over AEK Athens on Thursday evening. (AP)
