Strasbourg and Caen took the field before a capacity crowd of 79,500 at the Stade de France on Saturday, with the two looking for a cup final triumph to salvage a poor season. Striker Mamadou Niang gave Strasbourg the lead after a great move, heading in from close-range following a cross by midfielder Yacine Abdessadki. The score was 1-0 to Strasbourg after 39 minutes. Firing past However, when Raymond Lemaitre's lobbed throughball released striker Sebastien Mazure, he broke the offside trap and beat Cedric Kante to the ball before firing past Vincent Plante to equalise. It was 1-1 after 43 minutes, and all square at the interval but that all changed with just 12 minutes remaining Mickael Pagis tapped the ball to left-back John-Christophe Devaux and he thumped a ferocious shot into the roof of the net. Strasbourg held 2-1 after 78 minutes and Devaux's delight was as obvious as Caen goalkeeper Vincent Plante's disappointment. Final triumph Caen did create one last chance to equalise but when substitute Cyrille Watier played in Mazure, he could only fire into the side-netting. The final whistle arrived soon after as victory secured Strasbourg a place in next season's UEFA Cup and a second League Cup final triumph in the last eight years. Strasbourg, the league champions in 1979, have also won the French Cup three times before. It was left to Kante, the Strasbourg skipper, to lift the French League Cup in a golden moment for the Alsace club. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
