Barcelona's lead at the top of the Spanish Primera had been trimmed to just three points before kick off in their game against Getafe at the Nou Camp on Sunday - rivals Real beating Levante 2-0 earlier in the day. So the home side were desperate for another win and Barca's Brazilian midfielder Ronaldinho appeared keen to take on Levante all on his own - his second attempt on goal after barely three minutes flashed over the Getafe crossbar. The visitors had little to offer themselves, although Mario Gutierrez Cotelo's 13th minute free kick forced Barca 'keeper Victor Valdes into action. Ronaldinho showed Cotelo how it should be done at the other end of the pitch though, the Brazilian curling his 30th minute free kick over the wall and into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. Giovanni van Bronckhorst almost doubled the home side's advantage two minutes before the half-time break. The Dutchman's piledriver from 30 metres out was touched over by 'keeper Francisco Sanchez Broto though, denying "Gio" what would have been one of the goals of the season. Striker Ludovic Giuly had some big shoes to fill with injured strike partner Samuel Eto'o watching the match from the stands. But the Frenchman's 48th minute shot from Ronaldinho's pass flew woefully wide of the target. Giuly made amends eight minutes later though, timing his run to perfection to latch on to another perfect Ronaldinho pass before gently lifting the ball over Sanchez Broto. Barcelona could have added further gloss to the scoreline in the 80th minute, but Andres Iniesta's shot at the end of a fine attacking move was deflected wide of the target. Frank Rijkaard's side went on to win the game 2-0, even without the services of Eto'o, restoring the six-point lead over Real they had taken into the weekend. (AP)
