England football fans celebrated in Lisbon on June 21 as England beat Croatia to reach the quarterfinals of the Euro 2004 championships. Many fans gathered to watch the match on a giant video screen in the Portuguese capital while inside the 65,000 seat Stadium of Light, some 40,000 England fans watched as their team beat Croatia 4-2. Teenager Wayne Rooney scored twice for the second game in a row, making him the top scorer at Euro 2004 with four goals. The 18-year-old striker, who has become a star of the championship after scoring twice against Switzerland on Thursday, scored with a long range shot and a push past the goalkeeper from 18 metres (19.7 yards) as England fought back after falling behind 1-0 in the first five minutes. Paul Scholes also scored and Frank Lampard hit the fourth goal for England, which needed just one point to make the last eight. Niko Kovac and Igor Tudor scored for the Croatians, who finished in third place ahead of Switzerland. After the match, England fans poured out of the stadium in jubilant mood, many looking forward to the next game. The result means England finished second in Group B behind France and are now set to meet hosts Portugal in the quarterfinal on June 24, while France face Greece on June 25.
