Riyadh:
Kuwait travelled to Saudi Arabia for their Group A clash of the Asian World Cup qualifiers on Friday. The visitors took to the King Fahd International Stadium looking for at least a point to boost their chances of qualifying. Saudi Arabia looked impressive early on and earned a free kick in the 19th minute. Mohammad Al Shalhoob curled a left-footer and the ball crashed into the top of the net, following a deflection off Kuwaiti defender Nohayer Al Shammari. The hosts grabbed the vital lead, early in the match. Delayed second half The start of the second half was delayed by nearly half hour as the lights at the King Fahd stadium failed. When play resumed, the light seemed to have gone out of Kuwait's game as the hosts struck their second goal in the 49th minute. Saudi Arabia captain Sami Al Jaber ran down the left flank and then passed to an unmarked Al Shalhoob, who calmly slotted the ball into the back of the net. The match became farcical later on as Kuwait lost two of its players. First, Ali Al Al Namash was pulled up for dangerous challenge on Al Jaber and promptly shown the red card. Later on, defender Waleed Jumah was also sent off for another dangerous tackle. Opportunity seized Saudi Arabia seized on the opportunity and substitute striker Saad Al Harithi added a third goal in the 83rd minute. Al Harithi dribbled through virtually unchallenged and easily beat the Kuwaiti goalkeeper to score the third goal for his team. Having secured all three points, Saudi Arabia are now on top of Group A with eight points from four matches, followed by South Korea on seven points. Kuwait have four points and Uzbekistan have two. Saudi Arabia will take on Uzbekistan while Kuwait clash against much fancied South Korea on Wednesday. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
