La Plata:

Estudiantes de la Plata climbed to sixth in Argentina's Clausura table after beating Arsenal 3-1 at home. Both teams knew that a good result could hoist them up the table for at least a week since only four matches were being played this week due to the country's legislative elections. The home side, seeking a fifth successive home win, got off to the best start possible when former Arsenal player Jose Luis Calderon turned and volleyed home after just four minutes. And it was Calderon again, 20 minutes later, as the Arsenal defence gave him the freedom of the penalty area, who made the score 2-0 after a free-kick on the left. Reducing the deficit To their credit the visitors fought back and they came close to reducing the deficit but the woodwork denied them three times within the space of a couple of minutes before the break. The first incident saw Juan Pablo Caffa hit the woodwork with a freekick and Santiago Raymonda equally unlucky with his shot from the rebound. Two minutes later, Caffa turned away in anguish as another effort came back off the upright. Pressure paid off Eleven minutes after the break, Arsenal's pressure finally paid off as Gaston Esmerado thumped the ball into the roof of the net to make the score 2-1. But much of that good work was undone two minutes later. Victor Lopez, who was already on a yellow card, brought down Marcelo Carrusca on the edge of the area and the Arsenal defender started walking almost before the referee brandished the inevitable red card. Despite the one-man deficit, the visitors continued to press forward in search of an equaliser but after 67 minutes they got caught on the break. Confusion between Esteban Dreer in the Arsenal goal and one of his defenders left Dreer stranded and Jose Sosa, with a superb lob, put the game beyond Arsenal's reach. So, 3-1 to Estudiantes the final score. They climb to sixth in the table after their fifth successive home win while Arsenal fall back to 12th. (AP)
