Sao Paulo:
Two Edmundo penalty kicks, the second of which was scored in injury time, saw Figueirense claim a 2-2 draw away to Palmeiras in the Campeonato Brasileiro on Wednesday night. Palmeiras were looking to move up into fourth place in the standings when they hosted Figueirense at the Palestra Italia Stadium. Fans both young and old were expecting a victory over a visiting side that has struggled throughout the season. But it would take the home side until the 17th minute to create a chance - Baiano's 30-yard effort punched wide by Figueirense's floundering goalkeeper Gustavo. Cleber's long ball a minute later saw Figueirense make a rare foray into the Palmeiras penalty area. Clumsy foul Under pressure from Adriano, Gamarra headed the ball weakly into his own box and it fell kindly for veteran striker Edmundo, who drew Palmeiras's 'keeper Marcos into a clumsy foul. Former Brazilian international Edmundo confidently fired the spot kick straight down the middle of Marcos' goal and the visitors went ahead 1-0. But Figueirense's lead lasted only for 12 minutes. Gustavo fortuitously stopped Baiano's deflected 31st minute free kick with his legs, only for Gioino to turn the ball in from close range. The visitors hopefully appealed for an offside flag that was not forthcoming and the score was levelled at a goal apiece. Palmeiras took the lead three minutes after the start of the second half. Juninho was afforded all of the time and space that he could possibly want in midfield and he headed towards the Figueirense goal. Measured pass The former Middlesbrough playmaker spotted the haring run from Baiano - although the Figueirense defence clearly did not - and provided a perfectly measured pass for the rightback. Baiano took one touch and quickly steered a shot past substitute goalkeeper Edson Bastos to make it 2-1. Palmeiras were closing in on a win that would have taken them above Fluminense in the standings when Figueirense made a late break. Alessandro picked out Edmundo, who switched play to the right-hand side with an intuitive pass to Bruno. The substitute cut inside on to his left foot and lifted a shot over Marcos that was headed for the back of the net before the intervention of Baiano. Palmeiras' goal scorer tipped the ball on to the crossbar with his hand and referee Leonardo Gaciba Da Silva showed no hesitation in handing out a straight red card and an injury time penalty. Edmundo took no chances this time around and fired his spot kick inside Marcos' left-hand goal post, scoring his second goal of the game to earn Figueirense a point from the 2-2 draw.
