Iwata, Ilhwa win in Asian League

Brazilian striker Rodrigo Gral scored a pair of goals as Jubilo Iwata of Japan defeated BEC Tero Sasana football club of Thailand 3-0 to retain first place in Group E of the Asian Champions League. Yesterday's other winners include Seongnam Ilhwa and Chonbuk Hyundai Motors of South Korea, Pakhtakor of Uzbekistan, Krung Thai Bank of Thailand, Al Sadd of Qatar and Al Wahda of the United Arab Emirates. Zob Ahan of Iran and Riffa of Bahrain drew 0-0, while Sharjah of the United Arab Emirates and Al Hilal of Saudi Arabia also drew 0-0. In Iwata, Japan, Gral opened the scoring just before halftime at Yamaha Stadium, and then doubled the lead for the 2002 J-League champions three minutes after the break. Midfielder Toshihiro Hattori scored the third goal on a penalty kick in the 81st minute. In Shanghai, Brazilian Jose Raphael Sena tapped in a loose ball inside the Chinese box in the 87th minute to lift Chonbuk Hyundai over Shanghai Shenhua of China 1-0, also in Group E. The Chinese league champions were down to 10 men after Liu Hongliang was ejected in the 29th minute. Jubilo is in first place in the group with six points, followed by BEC Tero Sasana and Chonbuk Hyundai Motors with three points each, while Shanghai Shenhua is last with no point.
