Madrid:
Real Madrid beat Celta Vigo 4-2 at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium with goals from Ronaldo, two from Zinedine Zidane and another from Luis Figo to secure their place at the top of the Spanish Primera League. Celta took the lead with a first-half goal from Sasa Ilic, and scored a consolation goal in the 90th minute from Savo Milosevic. Real Madrid are top of the table with 59 points, eight ahead of their nearest rivals Valencia. It was a lot to ask Celta Vigo to take on the 'mighty whites' at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium on Sunday, but Real Madrid's star-studded ensemble did not faze the visitors one bit. Sasa Ilic's early strike was well saved by Iker Casillas, who was going to have a busy first half. In contrast Madrid looked moribund, only occasionally threatening the visitors' goal. The exception being Raul's shot in the 14th minute which was well saved by Jose Manuel Pinto. Four minutes later, Celta's pressure told and they went ahead by virtue of a close-range effort from Serbia and Montenegro international Sasa Ilic. However, the visitors were unable to capitalise on their good start, as Madrid came back refreshed in the second half, hoping to maintain their unbeaten La Liga record. Ronaldo was the first to score in the 55th minute when he pounced after Pinto had pushed out a header by David Beckham. Zinedine Zidane headed home Luis Figo's long cross for Madrid's second goal nine minutes later and the Portuguese midfielder extended the lead in the 71st minute with a sweetly-angled shot from Beckham's long pass. Serbian and Montenegrin striker Savo Milosevic pulled a goal back for Celta in the 90th minute only for Zidane to restore Madrid's two-goal lead in injury time with a crisp shot. The defeat marked a sad return to the stadium for Celta coach Radomir Antic, who was in charge of Madrid from 1990-92. The defeat dropped Antic's team into the relegation zone, in 18th place with 27 points, in the process. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
